Our Story

AKOTA Home Care is a family-owned and operated company that grew out of a family situation just like yours. AKOTA Home Care and our sister company in Washington DC has been serving families since 1994. We started because our grandmother, who was living in North Carolina, began to be unsafe in her home. Her arthritis made her unstable. One day we received a call that she had fallen…and spent hours on the floor. We were five hours away! We scrambled and got a caregiver to help. Then another one since the first did not show a couple of times. Then some money went missing. It was a mess. We felt out of our control.

At that time, our founder decided we should start a home care company. Our president was in seminary at that time and thought leading a home care company was not what he wanted to do. But he and his wife started thinking they would hand the home care company off to someone else after a few months.

Then they fell in love with serving seniors!

What started out as something to do for a couple months has turned out to be a 26-year adventure! The same couple and their family are still running AKOTA Home Care and loving every part of it. When you choose AKOTA, you are choosing a company that has seen every possible situation. We are not a franchise where the founders are off somewhere else. We have decades of personal experience to help you navigate home care and all the twists and turns ahead of you.
