Most daughters feel as if they are not doing enough for Mom.
“…I should be more caring.”
“…I should be around ore often.”
“…I should not be too busy to help.”
“I Should”
This guilt-laden, past-tense verb is something we hear far too often. It typically comes from a daughter who is just starting to experience the difficulties that accompany an aging loved one. You love your Mom, but you have a full-time job that demands (at least) 8 hours of your day, and then some. You have a family; a spouse, kids, and maybe even grandkids. Not only do you love spending time with them, but when something goes wrong in the life of one of your children, they turn to you. Of course, there are other things that you love that take up your time as well; visiting friends, hobbies, travel, working out and even sleep now and then!
All of these things; your work, your family, your hobbies, your health and well-being, culminate into you having very little free time available. As you are starting to discover, caring for an aging loved one takes a lot of additional work.
Our Story
AKOTA Home Care grew out of a family situation just like yours back in 1994. We started because our grandmother began to be unsafe in her home. Her arthritis made her unstable. One day we received a call from a neighbor that she had fallen…and spent hours on the floor. At that time, our care options were limited. We lived a state away, and moving down to care for her was out of the option. Our kids lived here, our parents lived here. And she made it quite plain that she wouldn’t live anywhere else other than “home,” so moving her up into our house was out of the option. We felt as if we were not doing enough, but what other options did we have?
